The Introduction of the Special Issue

Selecting the right tillage method for plant growth has been always an important issue in agriculture production because it is affected by a number of economic, technical, geographic, and social factors. The main objectives of soil tillage comprise seedbed preparation, water and soil conservation and weed control. Tillage has various physical, chemical and biological effects on the soil. These effects can be beneficial and degrading according to the appropriateness or otherwise of  the tillage system used. In particular,  the physical effects such as aggregate-stability, infiltration rate, soil and water conservation, in particular, have direct influence on soil productivity and sustainability.

Therefore, different tillage systems and equipment’s are developed depending on soil, climate, economic and social factors. In recent years, considerable research has been carried out on tillage systems, soil-tool-plant integration, soil compaction, and soil and plant properties affected by tillage systems. Accordingly, it is appropriate and timely to publish a Special Issue for PROBE-SOIL SCIENCE, which highlights the tillage systems for sustainable agricultural production.
