The Introduction of the Special Issue Agricultural production is faced with many challenges currently. These includes climate change, rising human populations, declining soil productivity and increasing poverty levels in many parts of the world. Besides, there are increasing concerns over the use of synthetic chemicals in food production and attendant residual effects with serious implications on environmental and human health. These genuine concerns have made imperative the need to focus on plant based materials with capacity or potential to enhance food production in a sustainable fashion and at a reduced cost while at the same time ensuring human health and environmental safety. However, issues of sourcing, formulations, properties, applications etc need clear scientific information to facilitate adoption of these technologies.
